Road To Affordable Health Care
There is no such thing as a free lunch.
— Milton Friedman.
As good as it sounds, it is something that cannot be achieved. The issue of health care should not be associated with any political orientation at all. It is something that a society must manage and find a way to do it more efficiently and effectively. It is as simple as the vagueness of the statement.
One thing that everyone should be clear about is the universal idea that there is no such thing as a free lunch. There will never be free health care. The only thing that will be there is affordable health care, the road to which is basic supply and demand economics combined with awareness of Ayurveda and holistic health.
While I can go on detail about the idea, I just want to put it into general awareness to start off with. As such, the essence of the idea is to increase the supply of doctors and hospitals. The governments around the world should strive to create no barriers to entry in this space and also spend and support infrastructure development in medicine (schools, universities, hospitals etc.). The issue of quantity over quality is the obvious criticism here and it is expected. As things stand currently, the society needs to double or even quadruple the supply of doctors and medical infrastructures like hospitals and universities. It should be easier for private sector to invest in this sector. While free market approach to this supply side solution is the most apt, the government should also have societal structures in place to avoid monopolies and oligarchies.
Now let us turn our attention to demand side economics. It is perhaps the most simple solution and the most significant one at that. Consumers should just significantly reduce the demand for hospitals and medicines. As ridiculous as it sounds, it is the most vital step towards affordable health care. The essence of this is to change our lifestyle. Embracing Ayurveda, a holistic and natural approach to health and well-being, yoga and meditation, and natural foods are the necessary steps to affordable health care.
The said solutions will create thousands of new jobs and opportunities in natural medicine, food and well-being as well. Combining demand and supply side solutions together with the awareness of Ayurveda, yoga, meditation and natural foods more importantly will significantly reduce the cost of health care and make our societies and the world at large more productive.
